Projection & Figure–Ground

This master’s research investigated how projection methods could support a more systematic process for creating figure–ground illusions in graphic design.
Because figure–ground images often depend heavily on individual experience and intuition, the study examined relationships between silhouette, positive and negative space, metaphor and projection. Front projection, rear projection and photogram-based approaches were explored, with rear projection combined with mind mapping identified as the most feasible method within the study.
The research developed a ten-step design process: defining a theme, breaking it down, developing associations, returning to source objects, considering metaphor, selecting appropriate forms, anticipating the image, projecting, observing and post-processing.
The method was applied to ten Sustainable Development Goal themes, producing fifteen posters, and was subsequently tested through a workshop in which participants produced eleven additional works. Post-workshop responses indicated improved understanding of the method, greater ability to apply it, and strong motivation to continue experimenting with figure–ground illusion. The study demonstrates how an intuitive visual technique can be investigated through an explicit and repeatable design process.
Making with projection
The research tests how objects, bodies and projected light can produce figure–ground images. Workshop participants adjust physical forms and observe the silhouettes they create, moving between an object and the image around it.

A short projection study

Reading the space between閱讀形體之間的空間
The illuminated panels place several figure–ground results side by side. Each image asks the viewer to shift attention between the dark silhouette and the light space it defines.

Recording a repeatable process
The publication records the relationship between the setup, projected image and finished graphic. These stages sit within a ten-step method developed to make figure–ground experiments easier to plan, observe and repeat.
